Ans. On the way to Pune Shaistakhan captured the towns of Shirval, Shivapur, Saswad.

(b) Why did Shaistakhan at last raise the siege of Purandar ?

Ans. Shaistakhan was tired of the continuous harassment by the Maratha troops, therefore he last raised the siege of Purandar.

(c) What was Shaistakhan afraid that might happen ?

Ans. Shaistakhan was afraid that if he lost only his fingers in the first attack, Shivaji might cut his head off in the second.

3. Give reasons.

(a) Emperor Aurangzeb was enraged and sent Shaistakhan to deal with Shivaji.

Ans. To avenge the attacks of the Moghuls, Shivaji carried out raids in the territory of the Moghuls. This act of Shivaji enraged the Moghul Emperor, Aurangzeb. Therefore the enraged Aurangzeb sent his uncle Shaistakhan, to deal with Shivaji and teach him a lesson.

(b) Shaistakhan tried to escape through the window.

Ans. In Lal Mahal, Shivaji went straight to the Khan’s chambers and took out his sword. The terrified, Khan started shouting ‘the Devil, the Devil’ and tried to escape through the
window.  In order to save his life Shaistakhan tried to escaped through the window.
