1. Read the passage and answer the following :

  • Which book is introduced in the passage ?

ANSWER: The novel ‘The Phantom Tollbooth’ written by Norman Juster’s is introduced in the passage.

  • Where does the story take place ?

ANSWER: The story takes place in San Francisco in the States.

  • Who is the main character in the story ?

ANSWER: A young boy Milo is the main character in the story.

  • Why is the tollbooth called a ‘phantom’ tollbooth ?

ANSWER: The tollbooth is called a ‘phantom’ tollbooth because it had some superpower so that it disappeared when Milo passed it.

  • When was the book written ?

ANSWER: The book was written more than 50 years ago.

  • Who has written the book ?

ANSWER: The book was written by Norman Juster.

2. List the various people and places mentioned in the passage. The places Milo visits and the people he meets have unusual names. Write the meanings of those names.

ANSWER: The various people Milo meets are :

  1. Rhyme: these are words that end with similar sound
  2. Reason: means cause for something
  3. Lethargarians: means lazy and lethargic people

The various places Milo travels are:

  1. Land of expectations: a place where we feel lots of hope to find something
  2. Kingdom of Wisdom: a place where all people are wise
  3. The Doldrums: a place where all people feel sadness and fear

3. List the various things that the Lethargarians do or want to do. Can you sum up all of it in one word or phrase ?

ANSWER: The Lethargarians did the follwing activities the whole day: daydreaming, taking naps, dawdling, delaying, biding their time, lingering, putting off for tomorrow what they can do today, loafing and lounging, dillydallying and complaining.

They wanted to do the following activities: brooding, lagging, plodding and procrastinating.

Summing up all of it in one word or phrase: They did nothing, just kept complaining and blaming others.

4. In the novel, the Lethargarians give a whole day’s time table of their activities.Can you guess what it would be like ? Use your own ideas and prepare their time table.

ANSWER:

  • 10 am: wake up
  • 10 to 11 am: breakfast
  • 11 – 1 pm am: sleep
  • 1 –  3 pm : lunch
  • 3 – 6 pm: relaxing
  • 6 – 7 : tea and snacks
  • 7 – 9 : dinner
  • 9 – 11: complaint that they had a busy day
  • 11: sleep
